Day158

Another slog of a day. Another 25 miles.

Did the last possible road walk of the trail.

Climbed a stupid pointless mountain to get a mediocre katahdin view. I tried very hard to find a bushwack or beach walk to dodge it, but failed.

We are camping near rainbow lake which is supposed to have views of katahdin but doesn’t really it seems.

Tomorrow is a mad dash into Baxter state park. I’m out of food so I need to go to the camp store there, but the more important thing is getting a campsite for tomorrow. Traditionally thru hikers stay at “the birches” site but only 12 people are allowed to stay per night and the ATC center in Monson said it is likely to be full tomorrow night. A ton of people in the bubble realize they are going too slow to make katahdin before it closes, then fly up north to do this final section, so we are competing with a bunch of people for spots (and also explains why it is so damned crowded up here). Supposedly if the birches is full they will set us up at another nearby site but there’s no telling.

I’m going to try to be up before sunrise so I can make it to the store as it opens. Store is 11 miles out, then some additional number of miles to whatever site we get.

Feet feel pretty wrecked. Been a lot of miles so far.
