Day108

Notyet wanted to get a haircut in town so I left without him to get started on the day since I knew it was going to heat up.

Got to the lemon squeezer real early. The crevasse is real easy, there’s a cool scramble afterwards too that people seem to skip a lot but I managed to do it with a heavy pack on fine. I ate the lemon as required by the ATC.

Not much else notable between there and the shelter, but I pulled some shenanigans as far as getting to the shelter. Water here is real scarce so staying at West Mountain shelter pretty much requires hauling a bunch of water up a pretty steep 3 mile stretch. I found out that the reason this shelter is so far off trail though, is that the trail was rerouted in 2024. If you take the old trail (which isn’t on farout, and this requires looking at the actual older topo map), you can get to the shelter and pass by a slightly closer water source. So I made my way through the unblazed, mostly unused, old AT for a bit.

The water was closer for sure, but it was still a brutal slog in the heat to carry it up to the shelter. Views here are pretty crazy. Not looking forward to the trek out tomorrow or the heat. Looking at a 22 mile day, I’ll be up early no matter what to catch sunrise tho, so maybe I can knock it out before it gets brutal.
