Solid day today I think even tho the miles aren’t crazy. I realized last night just before I went to bed that I had lost my headlamp. Not the end of the world but not great (hard to night hike much when there are so few hours of night). Notyet had planned to go into the nearby town of greenwood lake, which is accessible by trail, to pick up some meds as he is becoming somewhat paranoid about getting Lyme disease with the increase in ticks we are seeing. I thought I might be able to pick up a headlamp there, but after doing some quick research the town seemed pretty barren. Next best bet was the larger town of Harriman/Monroe which was accessible by Uber about 15 miles north. I debated getting a headlamp delivered to the trail from there vs just staying there for the night and decided I’d just book the hotel and bail on camping at the pond. Notyet took longer than expected in greenwood so decided to join me.
As far as hiking goes New York has been pretty cool. The woods here are kind of different. They are much more open so there is a good amount of breeze, but there’s still decent shade.

There’s been a good amount of scrambling and I’ve honestly begun to enjoy it somehow.

Should have been able to eek out another two miles for a further pickup point, but I got turned around for a good chunk of the last section of trail and burned a bunch of time. The one pain point in NY so far is that the blazes can be quite funky. I’ve been trying to be better about not pulling up farout every 10 minutes but NY is making that a little harder. Got to the hotel tho, got my headlamp and some light resupply, and don’t have to sleep near a bug infested pond.
Tomorrow is 18 miles to the west mountain shelter. It is way off trail and means a pretty gnarly water haul, but it is supposed to have some really great views. Heat starts to pick back up tomorrow. Not looking forward to that.
