Day92

Woke up in a pool of sweat. Didn’t get out as early as I’d hoped but still got out before dark. All things considered the morning was pretty smooth. I had cleared 16 miles by noon. Then, as expected, it got hot. Hotter than yesterday, not as hot as it will be tomorrow, but nonetheless it was fucking miserable.

The heat and humidity were brutal, the insects were relentless, and the rocks have really started to pick up. The classic AT combo of 90 degree heat and miles of rock hopping has left me with some fun and exciting and incredibly painful heel blisters that I’m sure are going to fuck me up tomorrow and we’ll into the future.

I did more miles today than I’ve done on any other day but I feel no sense of accomplishment. It was done out of necessity so that I wouldn’t have to do those miles in even more excruciating conditions. In theory I could make it to port Clinton tomorrow. The schedule even recommends a 23 mile day from my current site into town. I have 0 optimism for that approach however. I know there is some crazy amount of bullshit lying in wait between here and Port Clinton. My plan is simply to wake up as early as humanly possible, hike until noon, drop my shit wherever, and pray to be able to wait out the heat under the shade of my tarp, then repeat the next day.

I am beyond wrecked. If today could be interpreted as anything at all, it would be as a sign from the universe that I should not be out here. Hopefully I will be able to sleep and recover some to the finest sounds that the PA woods has to offer. A beautiful symphony of bugs attempting to get into my hammock to drain fluid from my eyeballs, F150s going 85 down the 501, and gunfire from the nearby national guard base. If a stray round were to make it into my hammock, at least I would be free of the PA heat.
