Day77

Shenandoah is going way better than smokey mountains for sure, even with the injury recovery. Today probably had the smoothest 5+ miles of trail I’ve seen on the AT so far.

Got up early and made it to the big meadows wayside just after they opened.

They just had breakfast there so that’s what I got. The big thing here is blackberry ice cream or milkshakes but it was too early for that I guess. They did have chocolate milk tho. I’ve never been a big chocolate milk person but a few weeks ago when I was coming down from dragons tooth to the Catawba gas station I was feeling like shit from the climb and the heat. Kdot was coming out of the gas station and told me “you look like hell man, but go in there and get you a chocolate milk and everything will be good”, so I did. That day was still the absolute worst day on trail so far but the chocolate milk did help so I’ve been seeking it out when I can.

Got to the scheduled shelter before noon. Skyland resort did have rooms available. They were kind of expensive but I bit on one anyway. It is a real nice spot but I can tell I’m the only thru hiker here and I assume people can smell me many yards away. Got to shower tho and recharge everything and eat a meal that didn’t come out of a large plastic can. Solid.

Lots of people out today since it is Saturday and the weather was real nice. Lots of good views.

Tomorrow is probably 11 miles to the next shelter. Could try to find a stealth camp spot a bit further but it is a pain in SNP so far. Could also push 24 to the next next shelter but I would need to start hella early and even getting out of the hotel is a bit of a climb.
