Our plan was to go about 19 miles to a shelter today. I didn’t think I could do it really but figured I’d give it a shot. Walked from the station to the trailhead, things were smooth and then I realized if started walking down the trail to another nearby hostel and had burned a good 30 minutes. Decided now would be a good time to down the most interesting thing I’d found in a hiker box so far. The sports beans.

This entered me into a state that hikers seem to call “bean mode”. Cranked out the 19 miles and was at the shelter by about 430. Notyet and a guy we met at the station named Graham were there. They suggested that if we went about 6 more miles we’d hit another hostel and then make the next day even easier. Still off the beans, I decided I could do it. Made it to the hostel, but it was less a hostel experience we had been used to, and was more so a cabin that was being maintained by a long time AT maintainer. We listened to a bunch of his stories until almost midnight, then it got real cold. The only heat system there was a wood stove, so we all knocked out around it. I’m in charge of keeping it fueled for the night it seems.
