Thought I would just rot on this zero but I’m being a bit more productive. The plan I’m tracking is kind of scuffed for the next several days as many of the shelters I’m supposed to stay at have been destroyed by Helene since the time it was written. I think I’ve got my plan down for the next 6 days tho. Looks not too bad, no days over 4k up, and after Roan it looks like things get real breezy for a long time.
Also have an Amazon cart with everything I think I’m going to swap on Damascus. Swapping:
- Sleep pad
- shoes
- some clothes (primarily base layer which is super heavy right now)
Cleared out some dead weight from the pack.
Packaged up my resupply. The knorr + instant potatoes seems to be working decent, so sticking with that. Repackaging all of that into Ziploc bags tho, which cuts down on a tiny bit of weight/waste, and means when I cook I can just dump a Ziploc into the cook bag and be good.
My main quest today was to get a hat, as my face keeps being burned to hell (Tinker told me he thought I was using cocaine behind the shelter because my nose was so red). Asked the bartender at the brewery last night if she had any suggestions as if she were some kind of oblivion NPC. She told me tractor supply Co was probably the closest place selling hats, but was a 3 mile walk. Found this goofy thing at a gas station tho luckily.

I think it is a “girl’s” hat (whatever that means), but it was the only one not covered in American flags and trucks, so I will make it work. I’m sure zpacks sells some dumb ultralight hat made of DCF that costs 200 dollars.
Getting up early tomorrow to walk thru Erwin to the trailhead. Not risking dealing with an Uber or shuttle.
